Excavation support
We design and build excavation support systems that protect the excavation perimeter, neighbouring buildings, roads and utilities in deep excavations: bored pile and micropile walls, prestressed ground anchors, steel pipe struts, shotcrete and rock bolts. We verify anchors with pull-out tests and monitor the wall with inclinometers.

Support systems
Support that suits the excavation and the neighbours

Bored pile wall
Bored piles side by side around the excavation with a capping beam; the wall works as a cantilever or is supported by anchors and struts.

Micropile wall
Anchored shoring up to 12–15 m with Ø25–30 cm micropiles on narrow plots.

Ground anchors
A prestressed anchor ties the wall to the firm ground behind it; the excavation stays open.

Steel pipe struts
Where anchors cannot be installed, steel pipes brace opposite walls and corners diagonally; they are removed and reused.

Shotcrete and rock bolts
Steel-fibre reinforced shotcrete and rock bolts; rock slopes, lagging between piles, soil-nailed walls.

Design and monitoring
Geotechnical shoring design; measuring wall movement and the tilt of neighbouring buildings throughout the excavation.
Comparison
How is the wall supported?
| Support | How does it work? | When is it chosen? |
|---|---|---|
| Cantilever wall | The piles work on their own, embedded in the ground below. | Shallow excavations where no support is needed. |
| Anchored wall | Prestressed anchors tie the wall to the firm ground behind it. | Deep excavations; when the excavation must stay open. |
| Strutted wall | Steel pipes brace the walls against each other across the excavation. | When anchors or a cantilever wall are not possible; metro, cut-and-cover, channels. |
| Shotcrete and rock bolts | Sprayed concrete lining tied to the ground with rock bolts or soil nails. | Rock slopes, lagging between piles; a fast and economical solution in suitable ground. |
The wall type, support layout, anchor length and strut section are set in the geotechnical shoring design based on the site investigation. Shoring should never be built without a design.

How is excavation support built?
From site investigation to formation level
- Investigation and designThe site investigation and the shoring design are prepared.
- WallBored piles or micropiles and the capping beam are built.
- Staged excavationThe excavation is carried out stage by stage down to the support levels.
- SupportAnchors, struts or shotcrete are installed in the sequence given in the design.
- Testing and monitoringAnchor pull-out tests, inclinometer and tiltmeter readings are carried out.

Design, construction, testing
The same team designs, builds and tests your shoring
We prepare the shoring design and build the piles, anchors and struts with our own fleet. We verify anchors with pull-out tests and monitor the wall with inclinometers and neighbouring structures with tiltmeters throughout the excavation.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about excavation support
What is excavation support?
Excavation support is a temporary or permanent system that protects the ground around a deep excavation, neighbouring buildings, roads and utilities. Bored pile or micropile walls, ground anchors, steel pipe struts and shotcrete are the main systems.
When is excavation support needed?
It is needed for excavations of buildings with basements, excavations next to neighbouring buildings or roads, and on sites with a high groundwater table. The system is selected in the geotechnical shoring design based on the site investigation.
Should anchors or struts be used?
Anchors tie the wall to the firm ground behind it and leave the excavation open; there must be no obstacles under the neighbouring plot. Struts are installed inside the excavation from wall to wall, do not enter the neighbouring plot and are removed and reused. The two systems can also be used together.
When is micropile shoring used?
On narrow plots where large piling rigs cannot get in, anchored shoring up to 12–15 m is built with Ø25–30 cm micropiles.
Can shotcrete be used as excavation support?
Steel-reinforced shotcrete can be used on its own when good adhesion to the rock face is achieved and it is applied at sufficient thickness. Otherwise it must be used together with rock bolts, anchors, steel shoring or a pile wall.
How is the shoring monitored during excavation?
Horizontal movement is measured regularly with inclinometer casings installed behind the retaining wall, and tilt changes with tiltmeters mounted on neighbouring structures. Anchor capacity is verified with pull-out tests.
Can shoring be built without a design?
No. The wall type, support layout, anchor length and strut section must be set in the geotechnical shoring design. If you have no design, we also prepare the site investigation and the shoring design.
What determines the price of excavation support?
The price depends mainly on the excavation depth and perimeter, the wall type and pile diameter, the number of anchors or struts, the ground and groundwater conditions, the condition of neighbouring structures and the scope of monitoring.
